Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra ranks second on DxOMark’s selfie camera test

| Updated:

Last month, popular camera testing company DxOMark took out the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra through its various tests. The firm gave the latest Samsung flagship an overall score of 122 points on its camera testing. This put the handset in the 7th place on its charts. Now, DxOMark has tested the capabilities of the selfie camera of the Galaxy S20 Ultra. In the test, the phone has managed to score a whopping 100 points, which puts it on the second place on DxOMark’s rating. The Galaxy S20 Ultra shares its selfie camera score with the Huawei nova 6 5G and has lost only to the Huawei P40 Pro, which has a score of 103 points.

As per DxOMark, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is a reliable option for selfie enthusiasts. The phone comes with a 40MP 1/2.65-inch Quad-Bayer sensor. The camera utilises 2×2 pixel binning technology to provide 10MP images with a 25mm focal length in the wide-angle mode. The front camera sports PDAF (phase detection autofocus) to provide enhanced stability while recording videos. The phone can shoot 1080p videos at 30fps and 4K at 60fps, and is equipped with auto-HDR processing and AI features.

The camera testing firm has mentioned that when capturing photos, the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s camera provides accurate exposure in all lighting conditions. The phone’s front camera offers a wide dynamic range, well-controlled noise in both outdoors and indoors, and reliable autofocus. However, the captured images have inaccurate colour and skin tone reproduction. Notably, the firm has mentioned that the Galaxy S20 Ultra captures sharper images than the iPhone 11 Pro Max, but provides a lesser depth of field. On the test, the phone has managed a photo score of 104, which puts it behind the P40 Pro and nova 6 5G.

When it comes to the videos, the Galaxy S20 Ultra has tied with the Huawei P40 Pro, which is the top-ranked camera phone on DxOMark’s ranking. Similar to photos, the 4K 30fps videos from the front camera of the handset have accurate exposure with high details, vivid colours, and wide depth of field. However, the selfie camera suffers from autofocus problems and visible noise.

That said, the Galaxy S20 Ultra offers selfie camera experience on a Samsung smartphone, as per DxOMark’s rating. However, even with the new larger 40MP Quad-Bayer sensor, the phone has scored only one point higher than the last year’s Galaxy Note 10+ 5G, which has a selfie camera score of 99 points.
