Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 2 could sport triple rear cameras and bigger secondary screen

| Updated:

Samsung has introduced a handful of new flagship handsets including the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy S20 Ultra this year. Apart from the new S series handsets, the South Korean tech giant also launched its second foldable smartphone called the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Now, the company seems to be working on the follow up to the Galaxy Z Flip, suggest a couple of recently discovered patents in the database of WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office).

As per the WIPO database, Samsung appears to be looking at two design options for its next foldable smartphone, which could arrive as the Galaxy Z Flip 2. As you can see in the images, both of these designs show a triple primary camera module. One of these options has a horizontally-aligned camera module, while the other one shows a vertically-arranged setup. This will be a significant upgrade from the dual camera module available on the Galaxy Z Flip.

Furthermore, one of the patents suggests that the successor to the Galaxy Z Flip could offer a significantly bigger secondary display on the outside. This should allow the device to show more detailed notifications. Apart from the triple rear cameras, design of the phones in these patent filings is similar to the Galaxy Z Flip. As you can see, their screens fold vertically and their selfie camera is placed in a hole above the main screen.

Unfortunately, the design patents don’t reveal anything else about the features of these foldable handsets. That said, these patents don’t guarantee that Samsung would be opting either of the designs for its upcoming foldable phone. However, they do suggest that the Galaxy Z Flip successor could offer three main cameras.

As for the other features, the Galaxy Z Flip houses the last year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor under the hood, which offers a maximum clock speed of 2.9GHz. The chipset is paired with the Adreno 640 GPU, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. The phone boots Android 10 out of the box with the brand’s One UI interface on top. For security, there’s a fingerprint sensor on the side of the Galaxy Z Flip.

In the camera department, the Galaxy Z Flip has two 12MP lenses on the outer shell and a 10MP shooter on the front for selfies and video calling purposes. The connectivity options are standard including 4G LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, A-GPS, and USB Type-C. Lastly, a 3,300mAh battery completes the list of the specifications of the smartphone.
