Gaming is an extremely tasking function, especially for laptops. It is why there are bespoke, highly-sophisticated laptop computers built to perform this function; these devices are colloquially referred to as gaming laptops in my circles.

Gaming laptops are undoubtedly very powerful laptops made to withstand the intensive load games exert. They come with specifications – from processor to video card to RAM size, etc. – on the high side of the extremes, and they have a history of generating a disturbing amount of noise.

Hence, it is understandable if a laptop buyer is in the market for a gaming laptop and won’t settle for a noisy gadget. But making the right move can be challenging. This article will help overcome the challenge by first supplying the reasons behind the loud noises gaming laptops make and why these reasons are important. It will equally provide a trustworthy list of quiet gaming laptops to consider buying when in the laptop market for one. Read on.

Quiet Gaming Laptops

Razer Blade Pro 17

This laptop is agreed in many quarters to be among the top 2 quietest gaming laptops, and some of the reasons for the consensus concerning its status among quiet laptops include its special vapor chamber cooling system and its high high-end specifications. The Razer Blade Pro 17 contains a Core i7 processor, 16GB of random access memory, and 1TB of disk storage. However, it is very expensive.

Predator Helios 300

A gem from Acer. This is another top-notch gaming laptop with excellent gaming performance, earning it positive user reviews. As expected, Intel Core i7 and 16GB RAM specifications, among others, are high-end. And it comes with one extra SSD slot. However, it has sharp edges, which can be considered a major con.

MSI GL65 Leopard

Technically the most budget-friendly laptop on the list. Cheap, relatively, but not weak. The MSI GL65 Leopard comes equipped with a Core i7, 10th generation central processing unit, and NVidia GeForce graphics card. However, when compared to others on this list, it lacks connectivity convenience.

ROG Zephyrus S17

One of ASUS’ best gaming laptops. A gaming laptop that offers excellent performance with minimal noise and is yet budget-friendly. It is equipped with sophisticated specifications, including a 16GB ram, 7 cores processor, and NVIDIA GeForce. It is fast, has a wonderful visual display, and combines airflow with liquid cooling for maximal efficiency. However, its airflow cooling may generate some sound.

HP’s OMEN

Last on this list but certainly not the least. It has a wonderful screen display which is very gaming-friendly, and has a decent keyboard. Its price of just a little over a thousand dollars is equally pocket friendly. And its gaming performance is top-notch. With its Anti-glare display, 7 cores processor (Core i7), and a ram of 16GB, it is no doubt a good bargain. However, its RGB cannot be customized, and it has sharp edges.

Why Do Gaming Laptops Make Noise?

Laptop computers making noises is not a new phenomenon that began with the advent of gaming laptops. As a matter of fact, before now, noise-making has been a common complaint lodged against electronic gadgets, especially computers. Thankfully, rapid advancements in the computer-manufacturing industry meant conventional devices are being built to emit low or no noise at all.

However, most gaming laptops still don’t give their users the luxury of being noise-free because they are still largely fitted with parts that are notorious for noise-making and those that amplify the noise made by the other ones. These parts are among the reasons why gaming laptops unavoidably make noise. What are they, and what other important reasons are there?

Cooling Fan

The single most important culprit. As far as laptops, in general, are concerned, loud noises can somewhat always be traced back to the in-built cooling fan. Unfortunately, leaving a cooling fan out of the manufacturing process of gaming laptops is a gamble many manufacturers still cannot take because gaming, as mentioned earlier, is tasking because gaming sessions engage several laptop components at once, leading to significant heat generation.

And if this heat is not dissipated by the cooling fan, there is a risk of damage to the laptop by uncontrolled thermal energy. The amount of noise generated by the cooling fan depends on the size and design of the fan, and determining these two characteristics of your potential laptop is important in making the right decision.

Air Vents

Every part of a laptop computer serves a purpose. This is true for air vents as well. Air vents are assembled into laptops, gaming and otherwise, to facilitate heat circulation. These vents, however, are at risk of blockage and clogging. Blockage can occur as a result of improper laptop positioning during usage.

While clogging is usually a consequence of inadequate maintenance of the laptop. But one thing is common to both blockage and clogging of air vents: they distort heat equilibrium which may lead to cooling fan overdrive and consequently loud noises.

Drivers

Laptops need regular care and constantly updating laptop drivers is an important component of care for all laptops to ensure they continue to run smoothly. If a laptop still functions with outdated and unoptimized drivers, an attempt to run modern games on it would propel its cooling fan into an overdrive state because of the tons of heat that will be generated as a result of the laptop’s inefficient functioning. Hence, the right thing to do is to always keep gaming laptops’ drivers up to date at all times.

Over-Tasking

This is one major cause of loud noises in laptops. However, the relationship is not direct. Over-tasking a laptop computer by running multiple applications all at once leads to the generation of a very high amount of heat energy.

Another way to over-task your laptop is to run modern games on an old gaming laptop. By doing so, you are simply setting the stage for your laptop and its coping mechanism for heat (cooling fan) to be overwhelmed by the amount of thermal energy that will be generated.

When the heat generated is too much, the laptop fan works under intense duress, trying to match the rate of heat generation with its rate of heat dissipation. This overdrive state causes it to make conspicuous noises.

Malware

This obnoxious enemy of computers that cripples devices significantly affects the speed at which a gaming laptop functions, and this decreases the lifespan of the laptop’s hardware. And as the hardware wears out, the door for noise making by the laptop is opened because the ability of the laptop to function optimally without generating much heat is diminished – and uncontrolled heat generation begets a noisy laptop.

The range of digital threats to gaming laptops is wide, no doubt. It is best always to keep an eye open for them and act accordingly in the nick of time.

Final Thoughts

Being in love with gaming and desiring a quiet laptop are not mutually exclusive. It is a misconception to think that if you desire a gaming laptop, you must also fall in love with the noises. While most gaming laptops around make disturbing noises, due in part to the fact that gaming is deeply exerting function, there are known quiet gaming laptops, some of which have been mentioned above.

So when you enter the gaming laptop market to make a purchase, and quietness is still high on your list of qualities for your laptop, consider the gadgets spotlighted above. You will be glad you did.
